I originally joined Primal Gym as it had opened near to where I lived and I signed up for a programme called the Total Transformation Project - a short but intensive course of fat loss, toning and muscle building. It was extremely effective and I lost nearly 12kg of fat and gained more that 3kg of muscle in just 3 months. I was even crowned "Best Transformation"! 


However, as my work is quite physical and shift-based, I was putting a lot of strain on my body and immune system. I was cursed with injury or illness and over the next year, had to cut back the gym for recovery and healing. This led to a gradual slip back into old habits and being less active and a gradual weight re-gain.


As an asthmatic, I had a long recovery of 8 months from a chest infection and was eager to return to the gym and get back to fitness. As my 44th birthday was approaching fast, I wanted to get fit in time for that.


Whilst the TTP worked really well for me, I felt I needed a more controlled, gradual weight loss this time round but I didn't have the confidence, knowledge or motivation to workout on my own, so I decided to try Primal's Small Group Personal Training.

I was fairly active until my mid-thirties - I used walk to places, rather than drive, I joined whichever new gym had just opened and I went for a couple of months, before I got bored.

I got married and enjoyed going out to restaurants, bars and on holidays with all inclusive food & drink!


I moved into a new house, with three floors of stairs to climb and those stairs were getting harder and harder to climb! I felt terrible. 


I had gone from a fairly healthy, active 13 stone/82.5Kg at age 30, to a sluggish 17 stone/107Kg, with over 25% body fat - bordering clinical obesity in my early 40's.

I woke up one day, climbed the stairs to the bathroom (on all fours!) and saw myself, out of breath, in the full length mirror - unfit, overweight and wondering how I had let myself get this low. I wanted to be better than that & I knew I was running out of time to hopefully prevent long term illness and damage.


SGPT was ideal for me, as I'd have a programme tailored to my individual goals and obstacles and I would be supervised by the expert coaches at Primal, so they could correct any poor form or bad habits that I might develop, helping me to avoid injury.

My weight loss was a lot more complex than just exercising more and burning calories. I realised that I had to nail the nutrition, the sleep patterns (even when I work shifts), handling stress, the mindset, the way I thought about myself, face my vices and take back control so they didn't take control of me. Primal was absolutely the only place that had the means, the knowledge and the experience to bring about the change I needed.


SGPT came complete with this really useful nutritional and lifestyle advice and this is where Primal is unique from other gyms. The knowledge and experience of Darren and the coaches is huge! I'm a scientist and thought I knew it all, but Darren opened my eyes to really good nutrition, the way our body uses food and how making the right choices can make all the difference. I even learned how to sleep and handle stress better, all of which has helped me lose the weight and keep it off.


I started feeling better within weeks of starting SGPT. I had reduced my alcohol consumption and switched to a healthy diet, packed with organic protein and fresh vegetables, but it was delicious and enjoyable.


The training sessions were fun too and the other SGPT'ers were really friendly. Coming from a similar place, they knew where I was coming from and everyone had helpful tips and advice to share. Primal SGPT enabled me to fully embrace what health and fitness is really all about - not just exercising more but living better overall and it benefitting your whole life and wellbeing.

Primal Gym has changed my whole outlook on living, for the better, in a way that is now sustainable, enjoyable and has made it an autonomous way of life, where I can be the fittest I've been for 20 years but still enjoy an occasional treat, even a beer now and then!

The advice, friendliness and atmosphere created by the trainers, owners and all the members, makes going to Primal so enjoyable, uplifting and enhances the whole fitness lifestyle.

I couldn't have done it without all their support. It's taken a lot of effort and some sacrifices, but it's been well worth it. After just seven months of SGPT, my weight is down to 90kg, my body fat is down to just under 10% and I've never felt better or done so much physical activity before in my life - plus it's actually great fun! I have now extended my SGPT to 12 months and will again, as my goals change direction and advance.

I am now doing powerlifting, a variety of classes six days a week without burning myself out - a mix of boxing, strength, core or conditioning classes and I can keep pace with other fit and athletic members who are 15-20 years younger than me! I even took part in the summer Waterfront Festival held at Leeds Dock, as a member of the Primal Dragon Boat team, and Team Primal won!!


I do not feel 44 years old, and probably don't act it sometimes, either! Primal isn't just any old gym for me, its now part of my lifestyle, an insurance policy for both physical and mental wellbeing, a place to socialise, and relax, it's an investment in my future health and it's worth every penny.
